BBB III RESULTS!!
THE 3RD ANNUAL BACKYARD BASTARD BASH WAS HELD OCT 13, 2007, WITH AN IMPRESSIVE LIST OF COMPETITORS THAT INCLUDED MOST OF AMERICA'S BEST GRIP COMPETITORS. HELD AGAIN IN SCENIC PESOTUM, IL, AT THE FAT BASTARD BARBELL CO HEADQUARTERS, THE COMPETITION CONSISTED OF SIX EVENTS: GRIPPERS, BENDING, ODD OBJECT LOAD MEDLEY, 2" VERTICAL BAR, 2" DOUBLE OVERHAND AXLE DEADLIFT, AND THE HERCULES HOLD.
AS IN YEARS PAST, WE KEEP A FEW STANDARD EVENTS, AND TRY TO THROW A FEW OFFBEAT EVENTS OUT TO CHALLENGE THE OVERALL SKILLS OF THE COMPETITORS
WE STARTED OUT WITH GRIPPERS, AND SEEING AN IRONMIND #3.5 GO DOWN ON AN OPENING ATTEMPT, I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE AN IMPRESSIVE SHOW RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE. CHAD WOODALL KNOCKED OUT A HARD SE CLOSE FOR THE WIN. AND AS IN PAST BBB'S, 3/4 OF THE COMPETITORS CLOSED #3'S OR HIGHER.
1 - Chad Woodall - Hard (flush mounted) SE (on 2nd attempt, passed 3rd)

NEXT WE HIT BENDING. LAST YEAR WE HAD 5 MAGNIFICENT BASTARD BENDS, WHEN THERE HAD ONLY BEEN 4 DONE IN THE WORLD PRIOR TO THE COMP, SO THE BAR WAS SET PRETTY HIGH BY LAST YEAR'S COMPETITORS. THIS YEAR MOVED THAT BAR WAY UP WITH 7 MEN BENDING THE "EDGIN" ( A 5/16" X 7" GRADE 5 BOLT) OR TOUGHER BOLT. AARON CORCORRAN NOTCHED THE WIN HERE WITH A 6" "EDGIN"
1 - Aaron C - 6" Edgin
2,3,4,5 - tie - John B, Ryan K, Chad W, Jedd J - 6.5" Edgin

2" VBAR - THIS IMPLEMENT OPENED A FEW EYES. WHILE LESS SKIN DESTROYING THAN THE 1" VBAR, THIS MONSTER REALLY KNOCKS DOWN THE WEIGHTS. CHAD WOODALL RAN AWAY FROM THE CROWD WITH AN EASY LIFT & HOLD WITH 290 LBS.

THE 2" DOUBLE OVERHAND AXLE DEADLIFT WAS A FUN EVENT, MOST COMPETITORS WERE SURPRISED TO SEE THE STRONGMAN SETUP WITH THE BIG TIRES INSTEAD OF STANDARD PLATES, BUT MOST SEEMED TO LIKE IT. MADE FOR SOME COOL PICTURES, TOO. RYAN KLEIN TOOK THE WIN WITH A REALLY IMPRESSIVE 435 LBS, AND LOOKED GOOD ENOUGH MORE FOR THE 455 ATTEMPT, BUT NOT THERE TODAY.

CHAD WOODALL WAS ONLY ONE OF TWO TO LOAD ALL THE OBJECTS, AS THE FAT SLICK 45 LB BLOB WAS A HUGE STOPPER FOR MOST GUYS. CHAD BLAZED THE COURSE, LOADING EVERYTHING WITHOUT A FUMBLE OR DROP, IN A SMOKING 12.77 SECONDS. HE EVEN ALTERNATED HANDS ON THE INCH DB'S.

THE HERCULES HOLD WAS AN APPARATUS USED IN THE SNOWMAN CHALLENGE IN 2004, AND IT WAS STARTLINGLY BRUTAL FOR THE GRIP COMPETITORS. AS A STRONGMAN COMPETITOR FOR MANY YEARS, I WAS VERY IMPRESSED BY THE TIMES, AND THE PAIN TOLERANCE OF THE COMPETITORS. SCOTT HARRIS FOUND THAT A HIGH HANDLE SETTING MAKES THE HOLD A BIT TOUGH FOR A LIGHTER GUY, AS HE WAS LIFTED CLEAR OF THE GROUND & HUNG FROM THE HANDLES. OUR SENIOR (TRIED TO STAY AWAY FROM OLDEST) COMPETITOR, CHRIS RICE PUT ON A SEMINAR FOR ENDURANCE WITH THE BEST MINUTE PLUS TIME FOR THE WIN.
